Low Vision
Reduced or lowered vision often dramatically changes a person’s daily routine. Low vision aids help restore the ability to work, drive, read, watch TV, play cards, etc.
MAGNIFICATION
Magnifying lenses can be prescribed in glasses or incorporated into a lighted stand. Special reading glasses provide magnification by allowing print to be held close to the eye. Specially designed cameras can reproduce images on a large screen in magnified form.
LIGHTING
Often the simple use of a high powered light source may be all that is required to resume activities such as reading.
GLARE SHIELDS
Lens tints or glare protection glasses can be prescribed specific to certain eye diseases.
PRISM
Specially fit prism systems may help those who have lost peripheral vision.
OTHER TOOLS
Many books, magazines, and newspapers are available in large print. Clocks, telephones, thermostats, and playing cards with large numbers are available for easier viewing. Other devices utilize alternate senses: talking watches; books on tape; templates to guide writing by sense of feel and other aids.
TRAINING
Training is required to properly use low vision devices. Low vision patients who have lost central vision may be trained to use an undamaged portion of the eye to improve their vision.
ATTITUDE
Accepting what has been lost is the key to learning to use what remains. Sympathetic family and friends can help, as well as support groups who encourage, counsel, and provide resources to help those who are visually challenged. We provide the information needed to contact low vision agencies.
If you or someone you know may benefit from a low vision evaluation, please schedule an appointment with Dr. Allen J. Denison. A low vision evaluation typically takes one hour and patients should bring all glasses and magnifiers they currently use. Patients who desire to resume activities such as knitting, reading, or bookkeeping, should bring these materials to the examination in order to determine the best solution to their specific visual needs.
